Ear Infection
An ear infection is an infection that occurs in the space behind the eardrum. It is common in children, but adults can also be affected.
Ear infections usually happen when bacteria or viruses cause fluid to accumulate behind the eardrum, leading to pressure, pain, and inflammation.
Common symptoms
- Ear pain
- Fever
- Hearing loss
- Irritability in children
- Fluid discharge from the ear
Diagnosis is based on examination and sometimes hearing evaluation. Treatment may include antibiotics, pain relievers, and in some cases, placement of ear tubes.
